About Marcus Horton

Marcus Horton started his career path at The University of Texas at Austin where he also ventured into working as a bookkeeper assistant throughout his degree work. More than a paycheck, this experience instilled the value of connection with and the impact that bookkeepers have on the clients they serve.

Upon graduating from UT Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) majoring in accounting, Marcus began his first post-graduate job as an accountant for Apple, Inc. which led to a variety of roles spanning a number of years at Apple. Following that experience, Marcus developed skills and certifications to pursue a career as an auditor working over the years at several organizations such as UT Austin, Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CapMetro), and most recently as an audit project manager at Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) Office of Inspector General.

While still working in the audit field, Marcus restarted his journey with bookkeeping, serving in that capacity for several non-profit entities in the Austin area.  With each client, Marcus recaptured the recognition and value of personalizing bookkeeping services to meet the mission, goals, and needs of the clients. These vastly diverse entities taught an unending array of topics, skills, and programs culminating in Marcus’s next career chapter, establishing Horton Bookkeeping and Advisory Services.  In recognizing the needs of smaller mission-driven nonprofits and businesses, Marcus aims to have a more direct, individualized impact in the community through bookkeeping, consultation, and training.

Marcus continues to maintain his professional auditing certifications:  Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Fraud Examiner, Certification in Risk Management Assurance, and Certification in Controls Self-Assessment.  Since relaunching into bookkeeping, Marcus has also acquired corresponding certifications:

  • QuickBooks Online Certified Level 2 ProAdvisor (highest level currently offered by Intuit),

  • QuickBooks Certified Payroll ProAdvisor, and

  • Intuit Trained Bookkeeper.

While these credentials are not required to serve as a bookkeeper, they do represent Marcus’ commitment and competence to supporting his bookkeeping clients.

Throughout all phases of the professional career, Marcus has been supported by his wife, Laura, as well as their teenage son. He has also served on various boards in the capacities of president, treasurer, among others.  The Horton family enjoys baseball, scuba diving, fitness, strength training, and walking their dogs.
